ChatGPT maker OpenAI has announced a big financial gift to its nearly 1,000 employees soon after the GPT-5 launch. This number is about one-third of the company’s total full-time staff.
According to reports, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sent a surprise message to employees via Slack. It said that the company will give a bonus every quarter for two years. This bonus will be given mainly to researchers and software engineers who are working in the company’s applied engineering, scaling and safety domains.
Bonus amount and method
The bonus amount will depend on their job role and her seniority of the employees in office.
- Top researchers will get mid-single-digit million dollars (several crores of rupees) as bonuses.
- Engineers will be given hundreds of thousands of dollars (several lakhs of rupees).
These bonuses will be given quarterly, i.e. every three months, and employees can take it in cash, company shares or a mix of both.
Why was this decision taken?
Altman said in his message that this step has been taken in view of the market situation and the increasing demand for AI talent.
According to him, “We have recently reviewed the compensation of our technical teams. As the company continues to improve, we will continue to increase the compensation. But this change is new, so we are sharing it in a transparent manner.”
Race for AI talent
At present, big tech companies of Silicon Valley and funding-rich startups are offering bonuses and other offers to attract AI experts. Recently, Altman has lost many of his top researchers in Meta, while Elon Musk’s company xAI is also looking for talent.
