In the AGI race, OpenAI has taken a big step by launching GPT-5. Know how GPT-5 is challenging Google Gemini 2.5 Pro and which model is better at which tasks.

The biggest debate in the world of artificial intelligence (AI) right now is about which model will come out ahead – OpenAI’s GPT-5 or Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro. The race to reach AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) has intensified and companies are constantly bringing new upgrades.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been a strong brand in this race since the beginning. Even today, its weekly users number more than the monthly users of giants like Google and Meta. But over time, new players like Google, DeepSeek, Anthropic (Claude) and xAI have also proved to be very strong.
In AGI race: Why is GPT-5 special?
OpenAI recently launched GPT-5, which the company describes as a “collection of models.” Its most important feature is Real-time Routing. This means that the user does not have to decide which model to use — GPT-5 will decide which model is best for your question.
For example, for simple questions, a lighter model will be used, while for complex coding or deep thinking questions, the GPT-5 Thinking Model will be activated. This has made the user experience much smoother and easier.
In testing, GPT-5 has outperformed Google’s Gemini in text-based and coding tasks. According to reports, fact-related errors (hallucinations) have also been reduced by about 45% in GPT-5.
Where is Gemini 2.5 Pro better?
However, the picture is not entirely in OpenAI’s favor. Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro still leads GPT-5 in image and video generation. LMArena’s benchmark test also clearly showed that Google’s Imagen 4 and Veo 3 tools are giving better results in graphics and video output.
The same difference was seen in real-life testing as well. Gemini produced more accurate and detailed images in less time, while GPT-5 took more time and the result was not as accurate.
GPT-5 Pro: Is it really necessary?
OpenAI has also launched a Pro version with GPT-5, which costs around $200 per month. It is designed for more in-depth research and creative work.
Many experts believe that the Pro model is not necessary for every task. Most tasks are completed in GPT-5 Auto or Thinking mode.
Conclusion: Who is ahead in agi race?
If you use AI for tasks like text, writing or coding, then GPT-5 is currently a better option. At the same time, if your work is related to image or video generation, then Gemini 2.5 Pro is still more reliable.
The journey toward AGI is still ongoing. Both OpenAI and Google are strong in their respective fields. But due to brand value and user base, OpenAI has definitely got a slight lead in this race at the moment.
